What We Do

The Founding of TANHR

TANHR is not associated with or funded by any nursing home or health care company.  TANHR does not give out, trade or sell our membership lists.

What We Do

TANHR sponsers a variety of educational programs.  Examples include:

  • Crimes in long-term care
  • Current changes in nursing home legislation
  • Residents’ Rights presentations, including in-services for nursing home staff
  • Role of Family Councils and how to organize them
  • Enforcement of nursing home regulations

TANHR also publishes newsletters informing our members of current developments and news items on various topics of interest to nursing home residents.  Board members visit nursing home residents and encourage visitation by family members, friends and volunteers.

In the past year, many families contacted TANHR about receiving 30-day notices from the facility to transfer their resident to another facility.  Most families are afraid to appeal the notices.  They feel threatened by the staff and are afraid that their loved one might suffer abuse.  They are also afraid that the facility will say they don’t qualify for a medical necessity.

In August, 2005, TANHR members assisted in care of the Hurricane Katrina residents coming from Houston on buses to Dallas County.  We supplied information to Katrina evacuees and donated food and clothing to resident victims.

TANHR is a member of the National Citizens’ Coalition for Nursing Home Reform.  We work with this organization on national issues that affect residents in Texas nursing homes.

The Founding of TANHR

Texas Advocates for Nursing Home Residents (TANHR) was incorporated in 1989. There were four people who got together for several months before that and worked to get the by-laws written, the 501(c)3 application approved and incorporation papers in place. We have grown from those four on the Board of Directors to ten. We have TANHR Units (chapters) in several areas of the state.
Our membership is made up of people from across the state. Our mission when we organized was to work to improve quality of life and care of Texas nursing home residents. That is still our mission.
